The Benefits of Travel – Even If It’s Just in Your Own Backyard

When we think of “travel,” our minds often jump to faraway beaches, bustling foreign cities, or mountain escapes. But the truth is, you don’t have to cross oceans—or even state lines—to enjoy the benefits of exploring new places.

Travel, at its heart, is about curiosity, connection, and perspective. A day trip to a nearby town, a visit to a local museum, or even a walk through a neighborhood you’ve never explored can spark the same sense of wonder as a distant getaway. These small adventures refresh our minds, break the routine, and open our eyes to beauty and opportunities we might have overlooked.

For me, the love of exploring has always been part of who I am. My mother used to call me the “go-girl” because if someone suggested an outing, I’d instantly reply, “Let’s go!” She said I had a true “gypsy spirit”—always ready to discover something new, no matter how close or far. That mindset has shown me that adventure doesn’t have to come with a plane ticket—it’s about the willingness to say yes to what’s around you.

And for those of you fortunate enough and able to travel farther—don’t put it off. I'm writing this as I'm on a trip to Scotland. Where my boyfriend and I (along with another couple) are exploring local towns immersing ourselves into the Scottish culture and chatting it up with the locals. The world is full of colors, flavors, and cultures that can expand your perspective in ways no book or documentary ever could. Talking with strangers (a love of mine) in a café halfway across the globe, learning a few phrases in a different language, or simply watching life unfold in a foreign market opens your mind and heart. Stepping outside our comfort zones allows us to see the common threads that connect humanity and to appreciate both the vastness and the intimacy of our shared world.

Local travel also allows us to support small businesses, discover cultural gems, and meet people who can enrich our lives in unexpected ways. International travel stretches our boundaries, challenges our assumptions, and leaves us with memories that stay for a lifetime. Both are powerful, both are worth making time for.

So, whether it’s a weekend road trip or a plane ticket across the ocean, give yourself permission to explore. Sometimes, the most life-changing journeys are the ones right outside your front door—and sometimes, they’re on the other side of the world.

I'd love to hear about your travel adventures and something which stands out for you! Please share in the comments below along with any pictures. Let's travel vicariously through one another and explore the world together.

Happy Trails,

Dawn
