Why I Stopped Choosing

Footprints on a road that splits into two directions, marking a choice between paths

I'm going to share something I've been waffling with these past two years....

Several years ago I obtained my two Life Coaching Certifications. Since then, I've been telling myself I had to choose, real estate or professional coaching. The practical career, or the one calling me. So I kept them in separate boxes, thinking I could only ever do one well.

Life had other plans. A few years ago I left the brokerage I'd built in Colorado and moved to Florida to care for my mother through dementia and a stroke, staying by her side until she passed. That season asked everything of me, and real estate went quiet while I gave it. When I came out the other side, is when I earned my Master Certification in life coaching — something I'd wanted for years but never let myself fully pursue, because it felt like it would pull focus from "the real job." But my time spent with Mom kept pulling at my heart to help others personally. Especially concerning change. This pulling has never subsided. For whatever reason, recently this has become much clearer.

A few weeks ago I stepped away from my adjunct teaching role to open up my calendar and in the quiet that followed I finally asked myself: why did I ever believe this had to be either/or?

Here's what I'm learning — coaching isn't about handing someone the answer. A therapist helps you heal. A consultant tells you what to do. A coach helps you discover what you already know and move it into action. That distinction has completely reshaped how I think about the work I've actually been doing my entire adult life. From group exercise instructor, personal trainer, direct sales motivator & success manager and 30+ years as a real estate broker across four states — reading a client's readiness, sitting with them in a decision that scares them, trusting they know their own "right" answer even before they can see it. I just didn't have a name for it yet.

The funny thing is, none of this feels new. It feels like everything I've picked up over three decades — as a broker, a trainer, an instructor, a woman who's relocated over ten times and started over personally & professionally more than once — is finally coming together in one place instead of living in separate boxes.

So I'm rebuilding both, at the same time, on purpose: my real estate business here in Florida, and a coaching practice for people in transition — whether it's a career change, a relationship ending, a new city, an empty nest, a loss like the one that reshaped my last few years, coaching is here. Not because I'm leaving real estate behind for coaching.

Because I finally believe I don't have to choose.

So… who's open to a little coaching?
